In April 2023, Dolores Watershed Resilient Forest Collaborative and Wildfire Adapted Partnership hosted the Summit Lake Wildfire Mitigation Workshop, funded in part by Fire Adapted Colorado’s Opportunity Fund. Over 30 people attended this public demo day to increase awareness of defensible space and the risk of wildfires. Attendees learned how to conduct fuels reduction treatments, home assessments, and mitigation work. Workshop segments focused on chipping, pile construction and burning, and chainsaw safety and use. The Summit Lake area has the highest wildfire hazard and risk in Montezuma County and this single demo day resulted in 8-12 home assessments and generated 5 wildfire hazard mitigation projects.
